MICHAEL MAHADEEN (b. 1986), an educator, performer, and composer, works as Production Assistant at Montclair State University, New Jersey, and is a resident of West Caldwell. An active performer in the New York metropolitan area on clarinet, saxophone, flute, and piano, Michael primarily plays with the Bloomfield Youth Band and serves as music director for several local community theaters. He has performed off-Broadway in the orchestra of After the Storm’s New York production of Once on this Island, and appears in the documentary film by the same organization. He is also the producer, songwriter, and lead instrumentalist of local smooth jazz band, The Deens. Michael has previously served as an assistant music director and orchestrator with the Montclair State University Theater and Dance Department.

As a composer, Michael has received many honors for his works, including from the New Jersey Teen Arts Association, the New York Youth Symphony, and various civic and service organizations. He has had music performed by the Czech Radio Orchestra as part of the 2007 Dvořák Festival in Prague and Vienna, and is known internationally for his scores to video games in the Wing Commander series. Michael was also the winner of the 2008 Colonial Symphony Composition Contest, and has orchestrated for the Big Broadway Band. He has written for groups of various instrumentations in classical, jazz, and pop genres, and is published by Bandworks Publications.

Michael Mahadeen graduated with honors from the John J. Cali School of Music, Montclair State University, where he double majored in Music Education/Music Theory and Composition. He was a recipient of the 2010 New Jersey Distinguished Student Teacher Award, the Montclair State University Excellence in Orchestra Award (2010), and is an Eagle Scout. Michael is a member of the Lambda Mu chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, MENC, and ASCAP.
